As one of the shining jewels of the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, Carcassonne has much to offer visitors to its medieval streets.  Carcassonne is one of the most stunning walled towns in all of Europe, having been UNESCO World Heritage listed and a major part of the medieval crusades.  The castle, said to have been built on pre-Christian foundations, is one of the most recognized in France having been the location for many movies (including 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves').  Pont Vieux and Pont Marengo are popular with tourists, as is Lac de la Cavayere, Carcassonne Cathedral, the Basilica of St Nazaire and St Celsus, and the jousting displays that are held within the walls.

Carcassonne is well connected to the other regional centres in south-eastern France with Narbonne, Montpellier and Toulouse only short drives away.  Carcassonne has good rail connections with the high-speed train passing through the town, and also benefits from a small international airport, Carcassonne Salvaza, which sees regular services with Ryanair to several cities in the United Kingdom as well as to Brussels-Charleroi.  The Toulouse Blagnac Airport, which is located to the north-west on the E80/A61 motorway, is much larger and sees many more carriers use its terminal including bmi, easyJet, FlyBe, Jet2.com and British Airways.  As many of the more beautiful sights in the Languedoc-Roussillon region are slightly further away from Carcassonne than public transport allows for, car hire is a must.  Companies such as Avis, Budget, ADA, Europcar and National-Citer are located within the region.
